Project electricity system for the school

As a long term plan we would like to be part in providing electricity for the school. This project has not started yet.

Desks for the school

Two new classrooms have been built for the school to accommodate students in grades 6-8. Funding has been provided by the African Foundation as well as by andBeyond. The classrooms were opened in Feb 2023. The school has expressed a need for 25-50 desks for 50-100 children. Kisawa Sanctuary has engaged in reparing the current desks.

EmPower Benguerra would like to work together with other stakeholders at Benguerra to provide these desks. The project is in its first stage. There are ongoing discussions with Benguerra Community, Benguerra School and Kisawa Sanctuary.

Food for learning

Many of the children have had little or no food before they come to school. If the students could be provided with breakfast/lunch, or snacks/fruit this would be a motivation for children to come to school, and would also help the work during the school day. A long term goal is therefore to offer nutritious meals to all children every school day.

The project ‘Food for Learning’ aims to provide breakfast or lunch to all the school children for a year. The project is in its initial idea stage. Currently, discussions are held with Benguerra Community, Benguerra School, and Kisawa Sanctuary.

Many aspects need to be considered. It is important that the meals are healthy and nutritious. Education for staff will be provided on how to cook nutritious meals for many, budgeting, sanitary conditions, how to avoid food waste and quality control. Resources such as a kitchen, storage room, cooking material, uniforms, cleaning supplies, firewood, and food. Possibly, the project may lead to job opportunities on the island, such as bread baked by a local baker, egg farm to supply eggs to the school, locally grown vegetables & fruit, fish from local fishermen, plates & cups from local pottery, transport by local dhow, cows to supply school with milk. Additional benefits from this project may involve educational components for project leader, kitchen staff, older children who can help in kitchen and learn, and education for families about the importance of nutritious food.
